McLoughlin Point Wastewater Treatment Plant

Largest Infrastructure Project & 1700 SQM of Green Roof

Designed by LADR Landscape Architects, the McLoughlin Point Wastewater Treatment Plant situates on an escarpment in Esquimalt, near Victoria on Vancouver Island and is the Capital Regional District’s largest infrastructure project. The 1700 square metre green roofs, installed on several levels, restore the site’s natural landscape and provide habitat for wildlife. Despite COVID-19 challenges, it was designed and constructed on budget and on schedule – and is the proud recipient of the 2022 AECE-BC Award of Excellence.

Integrates Extensive & Intensive Systems

The extensive pre-grown soilless system was chosen as the sedum plants require no mowing, pruning or trimming, and very little water and nutrients to survive. They are heat and drought tolerant, a necessity to survive the dry summers on the Island. BioBerm™s were incorporated as an innovative and cost-effective option to enhance biodiversity.  BioBerm™ pockets of deeper growing medium integrate the best of extensive and intensive systems to support expansive plant palettes and create topographic variation and biodiversity while sedum blankets help reduce water evaporation, soil erosion and weed growth.
