Cool Kid on the Block

Green roofs moderate heat flow through the roof and save energy. They keep the building cool in the summer through evapotranspiration and warm in the winter by reducing convective heat loss. Green roofs also help mitigate the urban heat island (UHI) effect in cities, lower air temperature and energy demand for air conditioning.

Summer Saving

  • Increased thermal mass moderates heat flow and regulates indoor temperature
  • Plants and growing media together cool the building through evapotranspiration
  • Passive cooling maintains indoor thermal comfort and saves on air conditioning

Winter Saving

  • Vegetated system reduces convective heat loss through the roofing system
  • Vegetation traps snow, which adds natural insulation to the roofing system
  • Unlike reflective roofs, green roofs do not incur heating penalty in Canadian winter

Increase Climate Resilience

  • Deeper substrates enhance resilience to heat and drought; a fine balance between thermal performance and green roof cost
  • Robust systems stabilize temperature in the root zone and minimize plant damage during severe weather events such as chinook and heat dome
  • Rooftop vegetation reduce heat absorbing surfaces and increase evaporative cooling to mitigate urban heat island effect and reduce smog formation
