Indigenous House, University of Toronto

Native & Biodiverse

Indigenous House University of Toronto designed by Formline Architecture and Urbanism and Public Work Urban Design & Landscape Architecture has received national recognition for architectural excellence, most notably the 2023 Canadian Architect Award of Merit. The award jury praised the project for its innovative, reconciliation‑focused design that draws on Indigenous architectural traditions where the building “emerges from the landscape,” recognizing the outdoor spaces as integral to the project’s success. Indigenous House roof features the innovative Alpine Meadow pre-vegetated intensive green roof system with a biodiverse rooftop meadow blending the building with the green space of the Highland Creek Ravine.

Native & Biodiverse Green Roof

The Alpine Meadow pre-vegetated green roof on Indigenous House manages stormwater and supports biodiversity, simultaneously, meeting Toronto Green Standard V4. Native, hardy plants offer nourishing pollen and nectar, and nesting habitats that foster urban ecology.
