Green Roofs: Strategies to Meet Policy & Design Goals in Toronto

Description

Green roofs are an effective green infrastructure technology with multiple co-benefits to offer. As cities increasingly adopt nature-based solutions to help respond to climate hazards, green roofs are one of the most efficient low impact development choices. There are currently over 30 municipalities in North America that have either policies or incentive programs to encourage their adoption.

Green Roofs: Strategies to Meet Policy & Design Goals in the City of Toronto explains how a green roof can effectively designed to check off multiple requirements set out by the Toronto Green Standard (TGS) and the Wet Weather Flow Management Guidelines (WWFMG), among others. Many requirements are interdisciplinary and therefore a successful project requires a collaborative approach between the architect, landscape architect, and engineers. We explore individual components, learn about their functions and selection criterion, and how to combine them into engineered systems to achieve specific design goals. An emphasis is placed on the strongest driver behind the current green roof growth in North America, stormwater management. Proof of Attendance will be issued for one hour CE/PDH hour.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:

1. Understand how various components create green roof systems to achieve design intents
2. Learn local policies aimed at enhancing sustainable development using green roofs
3. Identify green roof systems that can successfully address a policy requirement
4. Understand how a multi-disciplinary approach to designing green roofs is key
